Box Office Weekend: Monsters University Gets Top Honors

Box Office

The box office belonged this week to two very different kinds of monsters; the kind that take over the world, and the kind you can take your kids to see. Monsters University, the latest offering from Pixar, handily won the top spot with an estimated $82 million, while the PG-13 rated World War Z, a zombie film notable for its long production time and a surprisingly tame rating for its subject matter, not only sat well with critics but got off to a good start with an estimated $66 million. Both bested Man of Steel, whose weekend gross does not reflect its total earnings; while the DC superhero only earned an estimated $41.2 million, its weekday gross has given the film an amazing $210 million, just a few million shy of breaking even.

The rest of the best are, surprisingly, mostly sizeable hits, with one exception. This is the End had another strong weekend for its type of movie, making an estimated $13 million and expanding its profits well above its $32 million costs. Now You See Me, too, though derided by critics has proven enough to be a success as well, though its estimated $7.9 million is certainly welcome. As for Fast & Furious 6, its estimated $4.7 million is a bit of a drop, but five weeks of solid performance and $228.4 million in domestic earnings is a drop it can afford, as it remains the second highest earner on the top ten.

And where is the lone loser on the list? Why, that would be seventh-place finisher The Internship. At $58 million to make, the comedy has only made $38.4 million domestically, and its estimated $3.4 million in weekend sales is not doing much to rectify the situation. While The Purge would appear to be in similar company with its $3.4 million estimate, its lowly $3 million costs have been well surpassed with its $59.4 million in domestic ticket sales, almost ensuring that the critically panned horror film will find itself in franchise territory.

While they may be at the bottom of the list, Star Trek Into Darkness’s estimated $3 million and Iron Man 3’s $2.2 million estimate should not fool anybody; both films are top draws in earnings for the year, with Iron Man 3 still safely ahead of its competition; worldwide, the Marvel hero has broken the $1.2 billion mark, making it the film to beat for 2013.
