Box Office Weekend: Mutants Lose Box Office to Mutants?

Box Office Weekend

Last week, the Marvel mutants ruled the roost. But, in its second week, X-Men: Apocalypse slipped to second with an estimated $22.3 million, though worldwide the film has done decent, if not explosive, business. First place went to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which pulled in an estimated $35.3 million. Unfortunately, at $135 million to make and only $69.3 million earned worldwide, the poorly-reviewed sequel is not seeing much Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows Posterreturn on its investment so far. Me Before You, on the other hand, has only gotten slightly better reviews, but even at third place with an estimated $18.3 million weekend, it has much better odds at making back its $20 million budgetary costs.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is not alone in poor-performing sequels. Alice Through the Looking Glass isn’t doing well either, an estimated $10.7 million adding to a lackluster worldwide total of $176.3 million. The Angry Birds Movie, on the other hand, is by far and away a worldwide success, an estimated $9.8 million adding up to almost four times its $73 million costs. Of course, Captain America: Civil War is no slouch despite only an estimated $7.6 million in its fifth week, what with a grand total over $1.1 billion in total ticket sales.

Seventh through tenth place contain one Disney smash and three unknown factors. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising brought in an estimated $4.7 million, but while its $48.6 million may be enough to help it turn a profit it is a far cry from the massive box office of the original film. It did, however, perform better than the debut of the well-received Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. The musical mockumentary starring Andy Samberg made only an estimated $4.6 million. The Jungle Book had an eighth weekend estimate of $4.2 million, adding up to a phenomenal $895.1 million worldwide total. But The Nice Guys is living up to its title in the sense that appears to be finishing last, as the critically acclaimed film enters its third week with an estimated $3.5 million and $29.1 million in total so far.
