May started with a bang, but ends on a whimper. After Avengers: Age of Ultron started things off with a massive weekend, only San Andreas rode high to finish things off with an estimated $53.2 million at the box office this past weekend, while little else made much headway. Not to say overall that there were no successful films. Pitch Perfect 2, in second, made only an estimated $14.4 million, but has taken in $147.5 million domestically and even
In fifth, Avengers: Age of Ultron stands proudly alone in its gross take, an estimated $10.9 million adding a comfortable total to its $1.3 billion in worldwide earnings, while an estimated $10 million looks to be a rough debut for the poorly reviewed Aloha. The romantic comedy from Cameron Crowe is not reporting its numbers, and with Emma Stone and Bradley Cooper at the forefront, that caution might be well deserved. So too is the unreported budget of Poltergeist, which entered week two with an estimated $7.8 million on the weekend and a $38.3 million domestic total – normally a decent amount for most horror fare, but the big budget effects probably cost a few more than the average found footage film.
Far from the Madding Crowd appears to be more prestige than potency, an estimated $1.4 million not adding a whole lot to an $8.4 million domestic total (though doing slightly better than that overseas with $18.6 million worldwide), while Hot Pursuit remains decidedly cold with an estimated $1.4 million bringing it to $32.4 million in total. And finally, Home remained on the list with an estimated $1.2 million, a worldwide success but only getting mild reception on home shores.
