The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has apparently had its big day at the box office as it fell to second place with an estimated $37.2 million. Its successor is Neighbors, the R-rated comedy starring Zac Efron and Seth Rogen. With an estimated $51.1 million, it made a strong start, especially considering it nearly tripled its production costs in a single weekend, and likely to do much better. Not that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has much to worry about…despite not getting the sort of critical praise its fellow Marvel adaptations have been getting as of late, it has made $550.9 million in worldwide gross…and even if it cost as much as Spider-Man 3 to make ($280 million budget), it is still a money maker. The Other Woman has also managed to defy its critics with an estimated $9.3 million and pulling off a decent income of $61.7 million over its $40 million costs.
The final four belong to two debuts (both critical and financial losers at the moment), one strong performer, and a disappointment. Mom’s Night Out made an estimated $4.2 million, not even enough to cover its $5 million costs, though it still made out better than Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return, which got even worse reviews with an estimated $3.7 million. Divergent, with an estimated $1.7 million, is the only film in the bottom four that is a known success with a domestic total of $145 million over $85 million in costs, while the late Paul Walker’s Brick Mansions appears to be headed for trouble, its estimated $1.5 million this weekend not adding up to much with $18.3 million earned against $28 million in costs.
