Marvel struck gold at the box office twice this season with a debut only slightly less impressive than the one for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opened strongly with an estimated $92 million and blew away all comers to the box office, though it has not been as critically well-received as other recent Marvel films. However, it fared better with critics than The Other Woman, which managed to become profitable in its second week with an estimated $14.2 million.
Rio 2 finally managed to make back its money with a fourth week estimate of $7.6 million, but Brick Mansions looks like it will fall short of its goals, its estimated $3.5 million giving it $15.5 million in total earnings…still some distance from its $28 million costs. Divergent managed to beat back critical disdain with an estimated $2.2 million weekend take adding to an impressive $142.7 million domestic total…though The Quiet Ones may be wishing for that kind of success, an estimated $2 million adding to a $6.8 million total on an unreported budget.
Still, an unreported budget is not necessarily a mark of failure; God’s Not Dead, which earned an estimated $1.8 million, did not report its budget for some time, and the $55.6 million domestic total is world’s beyond its $2 million costs. Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel still has not reported its budget either, but an estimated $1.7 million has brought the film $51.5 million, making it the second highest-earning film that Anderson has made.
