Critics are raving about it, and audiences agree – Straight Outta Compton is a winner, with a second weekend in the first-place spot with an estimated $26.8 million. Domestically, it has made $111.5 million, gaining ground on Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, which took in an estimated $11.7 million in its fourth week and $157.8 million in domestic gross. While neither is a certified success (only three films in the top ten this week have released their budget costs), Straight Outta Compton is likely one, as is Sinister 2. Though far less well-received than the original Sinister, at an opening estimate of
$10.6 million, it has likely done very well, considering the original film only cost $3 million to make, and even doubling that budget, Sinister 2 may well break even by next weekend. Still,
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. enters its second week with an estimated $7.4 million, though whether it is a success or not is completely up in the air, considering Guy Ritchie films, from indie darlings to blockbusters, have been surprisingly tight-lipped about costs. American Ultra, on the other hand, may wish it had a low budget as it debuts with middling results and an estimated $5.5 million.
In the realm of winners, The Gift still performs well on its relative scale with an estimated $4.3 million, bringing in a domestic total of $31.1 million on a $5 million budget. Ant-Man and its estimated $4.1 million still looks rough domestically, but worldwide has done well against its $130 million costs. But neither film holds a candle to Minions, whose $74 million budget has been toppled. With an estimated $3.7 million weekend, it has made $320 million locally and has become the top film of the Despicable Me series when counting worldwide totals, with $989.4 million taken in.
In tenth, Fantastic Four has plummeted to the bottom, with an estimated $3.7 million and a domestic total of $49.6 million. While it has done some business worldwide, chances are the troubled production is likely not going to see a sequel anytime soon.
