It may have a $175 million budget to make up, but Jon Favreau has directed another winner for Disney as The Jungle Book opened with an estimated $103.6 million. It was certainly a “cut above” the estimated $20.2 million for Barbershop: The Next Cut, but both films have benefited from strong critical praise…praise lacking for third-place finisher The Boss, which slipped
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice may not have busted $1 billion worldwide like most entries from Marvel Studios, but the odds of another movie seem likely despite critical panning. With an estimated $9 million in its fourth week, the DC superheroes managed to bring in $311.3 million domestically and $827.3 million worldwide. Zootopia, interestingly, is behind Batman v Superman with an estimated $8.2 million and a domestic gross of $307.4 million, but exceeds it in worldwide gross with $882.3 million.
The panned thriller Criminal, starring Kevin Costner, debuted in sixth with an estimated $5.9 million, and not likely to do much better business going forward. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 has delivered a solid, if unimpressive, performance over four weeks; though its budget remains unreported, its estimated $3.3 million weekend, adding up to a $52.1 million domestic gross, is likely a success. So, too, is Miracles from Heaven, but in a much more concrete sense; with an estimated $1.9 million weekend, it held up well with $56.9 million over a $13 million budget. God’s Not Dead 2, on the other hand, may only be a success if it has a low budget, as an estimated $1.7 million has brought in far less than the original, with $16.9 million in domestic gross.
Finally, Eye in the Sky may not be bringing in the cash with an estimated $1.6 million adding to $13.1 million in domestic earnings, but production studio Bleecker Street, who previously released the critically well-received Beasts of No Nation and Trumbo, seems more concerned about a low budget, high prestige approach to filmmaking.
