Box Office Weekend: Sully Lands On Target

Box Office Weekend

Critics and audiences again made Captain Sullenberger a star. With Tom Hanks in the lead role, Sully, the story of the 2009 “Landing on the Hudson,” brought in the crowds with an estimated $35.5 million – though – though it has a $60 million budget to cover. With only $10 million to cover, When the Bough Breaks, the thriller of a husband, a wife, and an unstable surrogate mother, did well on its own terms with an estimated $15 million. Don’t Breathe, in the meantime, fell from its first-place perch to third, but with an estimated $8.2 million and $66.8 Sully Postermillion put away against a $9.9 million budget, the critically acclaimed horror entry does not appear too worried.

Suicide Squad raked in an estimated $5.7 million, and worldwide is a smash with $699.4 million pulled in. But below it, surprise entry The Wild Life debuted with an estimated $3.4 million. The animated film, a Belgian import, is not winning over the hearts of critics, and its tepid opening spells little hope for its future prospects. Though faring better in pure numbers, Kubo and the Two Strings and its $3.2 million is still struggling, and looking to be a financial bomb, though not a critical one. The same could also be said of Pete’s Dragon, whose estimated $2.9 million has brought it to $70 million domestically, but still needs more than might be possible to break even on its costs before exiting theaters.

Bad Moms has cemented itself as a financial success, an estimated $2.8 million weekend adding up to over $107.5 million at the domestic box office. Indie Western Hell or High Water could potentially break even as an estimated $2.6 million has brought the film to $19.8 million in total. Finally, though sliding five places to tenth, Sausage Party is still a big winner, with an estimated $2.3 million adding to $93.2 million in domestic earnings.
