Though he’s not the director of the film, the Michael Bay touch is still present in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the film earning the wrath of critics but still proving a strong draw at the box office with an estimated $65 million, making over half of its $120 million costs. Guardians of the Galaxy could not compete against those numbers in week two, with only an estimated $41.5 million, though it was enough to give it a domestic profit in only its second week of release, as well as stand tall over everything else that came out this weekend.
Lucy has proven itself a monetary success, an estimated $9.3 million bringing it close to $100 million in revenue, and it is doing far better than Step Up All In. The latest in the dance-off franchise falls well short with an estimated $6.6 million opening, the lowest of all the Step Up films. Hercules, too, continues to fall short with an estimated $5.7 million, though worldwide gross has provided some mild relief to its domestic woes.
Get on Up brought in an estimated $5 million, but whether the James Brown biopic has succeeded or not remains as mysterious as its unreported budget. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, on the other hand, has been a success, with an estimated $4.4 million placing it just shy of $200 million in revenue. And though it was not a critical success, Planes: Fire & Rescue pulled off some mild financial success with the help of an estimated $2.4 million.
