Disney has a bona-fide hit on its hands again as Zootopia won the weekend box office for the second time in a row. While an estimated $50 million has added up to $142.6 million domestic gross, the film has picked up more than $431.3 million worldwide. The next biggest release was 10 Cloverfield Lane. Critically acclaimed, it opened to a much more modest weekend estimate of $25.2 million, but with an unreleased budget amount it
Deadpool remained a strong contender with an estimated $10.8 million, giving it a domestic gross of $328.1 million over a $58 million budget, making it not only one of the top earning Marvel films or the highest-earning R-rated comic book adaptation of all-time, but it is potentially close to becoming the highest-earning R-rated film ever. It edged out another film unlikely to be the highest-earning R-rated film ever, London Has Fallen, whose estimated $10.7 million has added up to a lackluster $38.9 million total on a $60 million budget…however, also struggling is Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, whose $35 million costs seem much more surmountable, but with an estimated $4.6 million weekend and $14.6 million overall, it has failed to make much of a stir.
Romantic comedy fell flat with critics as The Perfect Match debuted with an estimated $4.2 million; and despite mixed reception very few turned out for religious fare either as The Young Messiah, based on the Anne Rice novel, opened to a tepid estimated $3.4 million. On a third hand, Sacha Baron Cohen found little love for his latest comedic endeavor, The Brothers Grimsby, whose estimated $3.2 million is likely a very rough opening for a film that likely cost far more than that.
In tenth place, Risen remains flat lined, with an estimated $2.3 million adding up to a $32.4 million domestic total…not enough to break even. However, it remains well ahead of massive blockbuster flop Gods of Egypt. Though it came in ninth with an estimated $27.3 million, it remains a bust even worldwide, only earning $76.4 million in a $140 million budget.
