It was one thing to hold major draw on a weekend with no other new releases…but it is probably no surprise that even this week’s newcomers made little headway against Avengers: Age of Ultron. Up against an estimated second week take of $77.2 million and $312.6 million in total box-office revenue, nothing else stood much of a chance…especially the poorly received Hot Pursuit. Sofia Vergara and Reese
Comparatively little news came out from the rest of the pack; the biggest surprises came from Ex Machina (sixth place, estimated $3.5 million) and Woman in Gold (eighth place, estimated $1.7 million), which both earned more this week than last. The Age of Adaline and Furious 7 remained the best of the rest with an estimated $5.6 million and $5.3 million, respectively, but the massively successful Furious 7 will have to settle for second best, as Avengers: Age of Ultron has domestically made almost as much in two weeks as Furious 7 has made in six.
Neither film has much to worry about; they could be in the same shape as Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 (estimated $5.2 million) and Home (estimated $3 million), both of which have been successful with overseas income but falling a bit short in domestic earnings. Finally, Cinderella (estimated $1.6 million) and Unfriended (estimated $1.4 million) managed to hang onto the list for at least one more week…and with successful box office runs to boot.
