However, with the exception of Happy Feet Two (third with an estimated $18.3 million), the rest of the top five not only debuted this weekend, but are tops with critics. In second place, The Muppets had a fine start with an estimated $42 million, though the drop-off came quick for Happy Feet Two, Aardman’s Arthur Christmas (an estimated $17 million), and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo (an estimated $15.3 million). No word on success for any of them except The Muppets (almost breaking even on a $45 million budget), but considering the star power involved, it’s unlikely the others are winners as of yet.
Of the bottom five, only eighth-place finisher Puss in Boots didn’t benefit from the holiday weekend, earning an estimated $10.3 million, less than it earned in three days last week. Jack and Jill and Immortals made an estimated $14.1 million and $12.5 million respectively, but neither gained the sort of boost Tower Heist and The Descendants garnered. While only getting to ninth place, Tower Heist picked up an estimated $10.2 million, up from its $7.1 million from last week, while The Descendants gained great ground from a pick-up of 400 theaters and an estimated $9.2 million, well above its $1.2 million earnings the previous week.
