Weekend Box-Office: Green Lantern Brings in the Green

As one superhero falls, another rises to take his place. Thor may have just slipped off the Top Ten, but the number one film of the weekend was Green Lantern, with $52.7 million. The $200 million blockbuster suffers from poor reviews and, despite the 3D ticket sales, managed to take in less than 2D-only fourth-place finisher X-Men: First Class (garnering $11.5 million this weekend) made three weeks ago, which in itself was a down opening for the series. However, the much lower budgeted Super 8 made a strong showing, losing less than half its take from last week with $21.2 million, and newcomer Mr. Popper’s Penguins did moderately well with $18.2 million. While not as savaged as Lantern, Popper has received a mediocre welcome from critics at best.

Most of the field remains about the same, with The Hangover Part II ($9.6 million, with over $232 million in domestic gross) trailing X-Men, and Kung Fu Panda 2 slowly drifting down the list ($8.7 million, and likely to break even domestically soon). Bridesmaids, however, took a surprise lead over Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, earning $7.5 million to Pirates’ $6.2 million. Both have proven wild successes; Bridesmaids mere $33.5 million budget has skyrocketed over $100 million in domestic gross, and worldwide Pirates is only $50 million away from breaking the $1 billion barrier.

And, finally, while both sit at the bottom rungs, Midnight in Paris and Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer have swapped positions, Woody Allen’s Paris losing a small fraction of revenue ($5.2 million) in exchange for a few more theaters and rave reviews, while Moody’s already inauspicious debut is tanking rapidly, the family feature only picking up $2.2 million and heading for bomb status.
