Weekend Box-Office: Puss in Boots is Top Cat

Those boots will be dancing tonight…Puss in Boots pulled off the impossible, dethroning the juggernaut Paranormal Activity 3. While even with its 3D ticket sales it didn’t make as much as Activity 3 did last week, Puss in Boots still brought in an estimated $34 million to take the top spot. Paranormal Activity 3 fell by a large margin with an estimated $18.5 million, but has managed to rake in over $81 million since its record-breaking debut last week. A little less impressive is the opening weekend for In Time, the Justin Timberlake sci-fi thriller, which brought in an estimated $12 million. It’s a smaller opening than his previous film, the romantic comedy Friends with Benefits, which opened earlier this summer with $18.6 million. Puss in Boots and Paranormal Activity 3 are tops with critics; In Time, not so much.

Once again, nothing below the Top 3 broke the $10 million mark…in fact, most barely broke the $5 million mark. The two lone exceptions are Footloose, with an estimated $5.4 million, and the debut of the Johnny Depp comedy/drama The Rum Diary. Based on a posthumously published book of Hunter S. Thompson, the film only made an estimated $5 million, and isn’t exactly rum with critics. Real Steel adds to its running total of $75+ million with an estimated $4.7 million…not quite the sorts of cash Jackman was raking in as mutant Wolverine (X-Men Origins: Wolverine netting $85 million in its first weekend alone), but since the budget data still isn’t available, it’s hard to say if it’s doing well for itself without the foreign market filling in the gaps.

The Three Musketeers isn’t showing well for a second week in a row, earning only an estimated $3.5 million…not good for a 3D film with lots of special effects, and the second worst of all of Paul W.S. Anderson’s major releases at the box office (only Soldier fared worse). The Ides of March earned an estimated $2.7 million (with no budget data as of yet, still uncertain if it is a success), and Moneyball an estimated $2.4 million (which has been a definite success). In a surprise, Courageous made its way back onto the list, the Christian-themed drama earning an estimated $1.8 million.
