Weekend Box-Office: The Lorax Speaks for the Green – Sweeps the Box Office Clean

What executive at Universal won’t get the axe? Why, whoever greenlit Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. Despite many a mixed review, audiences gave it an estimated $70.7 million debut. The winner, it’s clear, it wasn’t even close; number two, the Todd Phillips’ produced Project X, made an estimated $20.7 million in gross. Not to say it was a loser, not at all; along with Act of Valor (estimated $13.7 million), the top three haven’t dropped the ball. All have been profitable, that much I can defend; but The Lorax made that $70 million all in one weekend.

The middle three all winners, as well, even if critics don’t agree (though only one of these films has The Rock ride on a giant bee). Safe House came fourth, with $7.2 million this weekend in estimation, and over $100 million in domestic gross (only one other film on this list has committed that duplication). Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds got an estimated $7 million over three days, while Journey 2: The Mysterious Island got an estimated $6.9 million, but anyways….

The Vow (estimated $6.1 million), like Safe House, a $100+ million blockbuster, while This Means War (estimated $5.6 million), with $41.5 million total, is a little lackluster. So, too, is Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (estimated $4.7 million), looking a little sickly. Its profits, like its hero’s head, are burning out quickly. The Artist (estimated $3.9 million), on the other hand, isn’t capsizing; though in tenth, thanks to Oscar (Best Picture), it’s currently rising.

Don’t worry too much if these rhymes are oblique. The next report will be normal…unless The Lorax is first again next week.
