Box Office Weekend: Ant-Man Tough, But Diminutive Against Summer


It took the weekend box office and by all accounts is likely to be a decent haul for Marvel, but Ant-Man, at an estimated $58 million is the lowest-earning weekend since 2008, bested (or is that worsted?) by The Incredible Hulk and its $55 million. It is also the only film in the top ten to report its budget, and at $130 million, will likely be a worldwide success, if not a domestic one. Despite an Ant-Manunreported budget, it is unlikely Minions is anything other than a success. With an estimated $50.2 million added to a whopping two week haul of $216.7 million, the movie has more than earned half a billion worldwide and is unlikely to stop soon, even with a middling critical reception.

In third, Amy Schumer and Bill Hader appear to have success in the cards with an estimated $30.2 million in Trainwreck. That amount is roughly the cost of the other films of director Judd Apatow (with the exception of box office bomb Funny People), so it would stand to reason that this film will make bank sooner or later. Inside Out and Jurassic World, on the other hand, have absolutely nothing to worry about, as the Pixar film and its estimated $11.7 million are adding to a $306.4 million domestic total alone, and two more good weekends (that is, beyond an estimated $11.4 million this weekend) could put Jurassic World ahead of the first Avengers film for third highest earning movie of all-time, domestically and worldwide.

Terminator: Genesys is struggling to compete here with an estimated $5.4 million bringing the domestic total to $80.6 million, but the critically panned fifth installment of the series is actually doing very well in foreign box office, with a worldwide total of $277.4 million. Magic Mike XXL, with an estimated $4.5 million, is unlikely to topple the gross of the original film, but at $58.6 million could have bested its budget by a long ways; as could The Gallows, whose found footage roots probably cost less than its second week estimate of $4 million.

Finally, Ted 2 is probably not much of a success, an estimated $2.7 million the best it could do for week four and $77.5 million in total. But tenth place belongs to the debut of Mr. Holmes. While an estimated $2.5 million may not be much of a start, the “prestige” film is probably not expected to bring in Jurassic World numbers, just critical acclaim (which it has).
