Box Office Weekend: Finding Dory Tops Again
The latest Disney Pixar release is doing just swimmingly (at least, in the United States), as Finding Dory grows ever closer to a $300 million domestic haul with an estimated $73.2 million at the box office this past weekend. Its second week totals overshadowed the release of Independence Day: Resurgence. The panned sequel to the 1996 megahit opened with an estimated $41.6 million, but at a $165 million budget has some ways to go to be successful…and even then, not likely to top the $817.4 million the original brought in twenty years ago. In the meantime, the worldwide haul for Central Intelligence does seem likely to be profitable, as the well-regarded comedy brought in an estimated $18.4 million for its second week.
Shark thriller The Shallows did well with critics, and it made a strong bid against its $17 million budget with an opening weekend estimate of $16.7 million. However, Free State of Jones failed to find much purchase even with a fifth-place finish, with an estimated $7.8 million so far against $50 million in costs. The Conjuring 2, with an estimated $7.7 million, has done very good business as it enters its third week, with $86.9 million in domestic gross alone on a $40 million budget.
In the final four spots are critical flops, but only one that could be considered successful. Now You See Me 2 picked up an estimated $5.7 million for $52.1 million in domestic earnings against an unreported budget, while X-Men Apocalypse and an estimated $2.5 million may look disappointing domestically but is still the third highest-grossing film in the series worldwide. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, with an estimated $2.4 million, is not doing well anywhere, having only made $153.9 million worldwide on a $135 million budget. Neither is tenth-place finisher Alice Through the Looking Glass, whose estimated $2.1 million adds up to only $249.1 million worldwide…$90 million less than the first film made in domestic gross alone.
