Movie Review: Our Kind of Traitor

The new thriller, Our Kind of Traitor, is worth the visit. Just the right amount of action, adventure, and intrigue. The dynamic cast was spot on and is sure to please.

The story starts out with Perry (Ewan McGregor) and his girlfriend Gail (Naomie Harris) in a bit of a tumultuous relationship with Perry having to try and make amends after a sorted affair he had some time back. As chance would have it, Gail storms off in a restaurant while on holiday, leaving Perry open to befriend a member of the Russian mafia, the very charismatic Dima, played by Stellan Skasgard. He is extremely boisterous, full of life, and in great need. We come to learn that Dima is in trouble and is petrified of the mafia putting a new man in charge, “The Prince” (Grigoriy Dobrygin), who is going to kill his family. Dima enlists Perry to get some information to the British authorities to help get him and his family asylum.

So the adventure ensues, throughout Russia and Paris. Without doubt the scenery is noteworthy. Hector is the head of British Intelligence Services, played by Damian Lewis, better known for his role in Showtime’s hit series, Homeland. Even though Dima is part of the underworld and a criminal/killer, you find yourself rooting for him. You like him almost as much as Perry. Their relationship really is the primary focus of the story. It is believable and although the bond happens quickly you are in a completely relatable experience if you’ve ever had an exceptional friend that you would move heaven and earth to save.

As you come to a point where you think finally Dima and his family are safe, you find he is not. The bravery and boundaries that are surpassed in the name of friendship are at the forefront of this action/drama/thriller. In closing, it’s a good film. Maybe not a great one, but Our Kind of Traitor is worth one’s time to experience.
