Box-Office Weekend: Spider-Man Repeats on Top!

This week’s box-office weekend was essentially a repeat of last week, at least for the first two spots, as both Sony’s Spider-Man: Far from Home and Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 4 held firm in the first and second spots of the top ten respectively. Spider-Man: Far from Home added $45.3 million over the weekend to bring its two-week domestic total to $274.5 million. Meanwhile, Toy Story 4 tossed another $20.7 million into its coffers to give the animated film a domestic four-week tally of $346.4 million.

Spider-Man: Far from Home posterTwo new films to the top ten finished in third and fourth place respectively. The horror film Crawl took in $12 million, laying claim to third place while the comedy Stuber earned $8 million and the bragging rights to fourth place in this week’s top ten. In its third week of release, the Beatles fable Yesterday dropped from third to fifth place with $6.8 million over the weekend, giving the film a three-week total of $48.3 million.

Dropping from fifth to sixth was Disney’s live-action retelling of Aladdin, which took in $5.9 million and drove its eight-week total to $331.5 million. Although the Disney remake did manage to leap over Annabelle Comes Home, which dropped hard from fourth to seventh place with a $5.6 million showing over the weekend, giving the horror sequel a three-week tally of $60.8 million. In its second week of release, Midsommar, fell from sixth to eighth place with $3.6 million, giving the film a two-week total of $18.4 million.

Closing out this week’s top ten, The Secret Life of Pets 2 dropped from the seventh to the ninth spot with $3.1 million over the weekend. This gives the family film a six-week total of $147.1 million. Meanwhile, Men in Black: International dropped from eight to tenth place with $2.2 this weekend, giving the science fiction sequel a disappointing five-week total of $76.5 million.

Finally, Avengers: Endgame leaves the top ten on its second go around in theaters but did manage to add approximately $476,000 to bring its domestic total to $851.2 million as well as up its worldwide cumulative total to $2.78 billion. It remans just behind Avatar [2009] ($2.788 billion) in worldwide returns, but still trails Star Wars: The Force Awakens [2015] ($936.7 million) in domestic returns. The Elton John biopic Rocketman also left the orbit of the top ten this weekend, but it departed with a seven-week domestic total of $91.9 million.

Next weekend will see the release of the new live-action version of Disney’s The Lion King, which will undoubtedly own the weekend box office, but holding off the web-slinging Spider-Man in the long run could prove difficult for Simba and his cohorts.
