Box-Office Weekend: Apes Take the Weekend

Talking apes managed to wrestle away the top spot of the box-office weekend from a stuntman as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes finished just $6.8 million ahead of The Fall Guy

"Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" posterDebuting in first place to claim the box-office weekend crown was Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes with $56.5 million for 20th Century Studios. Finishing just behind that was last weekend’s top film, The Fall Guy with $13.7 million. This gives the Universal product a two-week tally of $49.7 million. Meanwhile, Challengers held onto third place with $4.7 million earned over its third weekend in release, giving the United Artists Releasing film a grand total of $38.1 million to date. Also holding steady was the Screen Gems release Tarot which took in $3.5 million over the weekend to retain the fourth spot of the top ten and bring its two-week total to $12.0 million. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire also stood firm in fifth place where it added $2.5 million, raising its seven-week total to $191.8 million for Warner Brothers.

Climbing one spot to claim seventh place this weekend was the Lionsgate Films release Unsung Hero which took in $2.3 million to bring its three-week total to $16.8 million. Also moving up a spot was Universal Pictures’ Kung Fu Panda 4 which landed in seventh place where it added $2.0 million to brings its ten-week tally to $191.2 million for the studio. This movement dropped A24’s Civil War two spots to an eighth-place finish this weekend where it added $1.8 million to bring its five-week total to $65.2 million. Last weekend’s re-release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace fell eight spots from second-place to ninth this weekend where it added $1.5 million to bring its overall intake for the re-release to $12.1 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Finally, last weekend’s ninth-place film, Abigail, dropped a spot to land in tenth-place this weekend where it added $1.1 million for Universal Pictures, lifting the film’s four-week total to $24.8 million.

Only one film was pushed out of the top ten this weekend as last week’s tenth-place film, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, failed to make this week’s list, instead settling for an eleventh-place finish. Still, over the last eight weeks, the film has brought in a total of $111.4 million for Sony Pictures Releasing.
