Box-Office Weekend: “Avatar” Remains King of the World

Although three newcomers to the box-office weekend shook up the top ten a bit, Avatar: The Way of Water managed to stave off second-place M3GAN by $13.2 million to claim the top spot for a fifth weekend as it lifted its overall total to $570.3 million.

"Avatar: The Way of Water" posterAfter bringing in another $31.1 million over the weekend, Avatar: The Way of Water climbed to thirteenth spot on the list of the highest domestic grosses of all time. Holding steady in second place with $17.9 million was M3GAN, which now boasts a two-week total of $56.9 million. Also standing pat was everyone’s favorite cat, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which held onto third place with $13.4 million over the weekend to bring its four-week total to $106.4 million. Similarly holding steady in the fourth slot was A Man Called Otto which added $12.6 million over the weekend to bring its three-week total to $18.8 million. Debuting in fifth place was the action film Plane with $10.0 million over the weekend.

Also debuting in the top ten over the weekend was House Party in sixth place with $3.8 million. Meanwhile, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever fell two spots to finish in seventh place with $2.2 million over the weekend. The film now boasts a ten-week total of $449.1 million. Dropping a spot to finish in eighth place this weekend was The Whale with $1.5 million (the same amount it brought in last weekend), which brings its six-week total to $10.7 million. Falling three spots to claim ninth-place this weekend was the biopic Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody which took in $1.1 million this weekend to raise its four-week total to $21.8 million. Finally, Waltair Veerayya debuts in the box-office weekend top ten in tenth place with $1.1 million over the weekend.

This weekend, three films were pushed out of the top ten as last weekend’s eight-, ninth-, and tenth-place films were all ousted. After earning $14.7 million in four weeks, Babylon departs the top ten. Despite a strong seven-week showing that resulted in $49.7 million, Violent Night also takes its leave of the ten highest grossing films of the weekend.
