Box-Office Weekend: Avengers: Infinity War Tops Box Office Again

Disney and Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War decided to celebrate Mother’s Day this weekend by topping the box office for a third consecutive week. Taking in $61.8 million, the film brought its three-week tally to an impressive $547.8 million, making it the eighth largest domestic release ever. Worldwide, the film has become the fifth largest global release of all time as it has earned a staggering $1.6 billion—just behind Jurassic World (2015) which earned $1.67 billion.

Avengers: Infinity War posterTwo new releases took the next two spots in this week’s top ten. The Melissa McCarthy-led comedy Life of the Party debuted with $18.5 million, landing it in second place. Just behind that, with $16.5 million, was the thriller Breaking In, starring Gabrielle Union. The unnecessary remake of Overboard finished its second week of release in fourth place with $10.1 million, giving it a two-week total of $29.6 million.

The other thriller on this week’s list, A Quiet Place, finished in the fifth spot adding $6.4 million to bring its six-week domestic total to $169.6 million. Elsewhere, Amy Schumer and I Feel Pretty brought in $3.7 million to give the comedy a domestic four-week tally of $43.9 million and a sixth-place finish on our list this week.

Finishing in seventh place was the Dwayne Johnson-led adventure Rampage with $3.4 million. This gives the film a five-week $89.7 million total, which must be a bit disappointing to the studio given that the film cost an estimated $120 million to make in the first place. Charlize Theron and Tully finished in eighth place with $2.2 million, giving that film a two-week total of $7.0 million.

Ninth place belongs to the king of Wakanda, as Marvel’s Black Panther took in $1.9 million to not only remain in the top ten for a thirteenth consecutive week, but to also raise its overall box office receipts to $696.2 million, as it gets ready to become only the third release to top $700 million domestically.

Finally, Magnolia’s RBG cracked the top ten this week as it expanded its release and brought in $1.2 million in its second week. Next week will see the release of Deadpool 2, which will surely jumble up the top ten a bit. A few other counter-programming films—Book Club and the animated Show Dogs—will attempt to provide audiences an alternative to the wise-cracking antihero as well as the other action-dominated fare currently monopolizing the Box Office.
