Box Office Weekend: Box Office Gain for Mild Critical Pain as Michael Bay’s Caper Takes Top Spot

Pain & GainTo say that Pain & Gain is getting mixed critical praise is perhaps an understatement; it is Michael Bay’s best reviewed movie since Transformers, but then, Transformers was not a critical success. Bay, however, can make money despite critics, and his newest true story crime caper is no exception. On a low (for Bay anyway) budget of only $26 million, Pain & Gain has already made an estimated $20 million, which was enough to send Oblivion into second place. With an estimated $17.4 million, Oblivion has yet to make a domestic profit, only earning back $64.7 million on its $120 million budget, but foreign ticket sales have already made it a mild success. 42 needs no help overseas…the Jackie Robinson biopic has added an estimated $10.7 million to $69.1 million in sales, making the $40 million budget a profitable venture.

Despite its fourth-place finish, The Big Wedding is off to a rough start. At an estimated $7.5 million in weekend sales, the $35 million star-studded comedy is getting less-than-pleasant reviews and unlikely to do more than break even over the next few weeks…unlike The Croods (estimated $6.6 million) and G.I. Joe: Retaliation (estimated $3.6 million). Though The Croods is the only one of the three to make a domestic profit, G.I. Joe: Retaliation has done strong enough overseas business ($232.7 million) to more than compensate.

Scary Movie 5 (estimated $3.5 million) continues its underwhelming performance compared to the previous series entries; despite making money ($27.5 million versus $20 million on costs), it is by far the worst earner (and worst reviewed) of the franchise. It shares company with films that are not only better reviewed, but higher earning as well. Olympus Has Fallen (estimated $2.8 million) has made modest earnings, $93.1 million over its $70 million costs, the well-regarded indie film The Place Beyond the Pines (estimated $2.7 million) broke even in its third week of wide release, and Jurassic Park 3D (estimated $2.3 million) made its 3D conversion worthwhile, but still lags just behind Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace 3D in earnings for live action 3D conversion re-releases.
