Box-Office Weekend: Encanto Ain’t Fraid of No Ghosts


Walt Disney’s new film Encanto took over the box-office weekend, unseating Ghostbusters: Afterlife by a mere $2.5 million.

Encanto posterThe animated tale of Mirabel and her magical family – Encanto – made $27.0 million over the weekend, giving the film a total of $40.3 million over the course of its opening week. Meanwhile, last week’s top film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, dropped to second place with $24.5 million. This gives the film a two-week tally of $87.8 million. The second debut of the weekend, House of Gucci, finished in third place with $14.2 million over the last three days and $21.8 million total for the week. Marvel’s Eternals fell from second to fourth with $7.9 million over the weekend. The latest Marvel film now sports a four-week total of $150.6 million. The latest film in the “Resident Evil” series, called Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, took in $5.3 during its first three days of release to land in fifth place of the top ten.

The family film, Clifford the Big Red Dog managed to retrieve $4.9 million in its third weekend of release, but still dropped from third place to sixth. The film now claims a three-week tally of $42.9 million. Falling from fourth place to seventh was the Will Smith starring King Richard, which brought in $3.3 million over the weekend, giving the film a total of $11.4 million for the past two weeks. The science-fiction epic, Dune: Part One fell three spots to finish in eighth with $2.2 million. The film now sports a six-week total of $102.2 million. Dropping from seventh place to finish in ninth with $1.8 million was No Time To Die, which has made $158.1 million over its first eight weeks of release. Finally, the behemoth of the box-office, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, rounds out the top ten with $1.6 million, falling from sixth place last week. The film can now claim a nine-week total of $209.5 million.

Several films were pushed from the weekend box-office top ten; these included the three films that finished in the final spots last week. The first of which, The French Dispatch, leaves with a six-week total of $14.5 million. Secondly, Belfast ends its three-week run in the top ten earning $5 million. Finally, the animated Ron’s Gone Wrong departs the top ten after amassing $22.7 million in its six weeks of release.
