Box-Office Weekend: Flight Risk Takes Control

Following the elongated holiday weekend seven days ago, the last few days saw a new film climb to the top of the box-office weekend for the fourth week in a row as Flight Risk managed to cling to the number one slot by a margin of $3.3 million.

“Flight Risk” posterIn its first weekend of release, Lionsgate’s Flight Risk debuted in first place of the weekend box office top ten with $12.0 million. This was just enough to keep Mufasa: The Lion King in second place with $8.7 million in its six week of release – still, the Walt Disney Studio Motion Pictures product sports an overall total of $221.1 million. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures Releasing saw its One of Them Days drop two spots to claim third place with $8.0 million over its second weekend in release, bringing its total to $25.1 million. Holding its ground in fourth place, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 made another $5.5 million over the weekend for Paramount Pictures, raising the film’s six-week total to $226.1 million. Climbing one spot was Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures’ Moana 2 to fifth place where it brought in $4.3 million to lift its nine-week total to $450.0 million.

Neon saw its latest, Presence debut in sixth place with $3.42 million as it just managed to edge out Universal Pictures’ Wolf Man which took in $3.4 million in its second week in release, prompting it to fall four places to come to rest in seventh place this weekend. The film now sports an overall total of $17.8 million. Meanwhile, Searchlight Pictures’ A Complete Unknown held steady in eighth place with $3.1 million in its fifth week of release, bringing its cumulative total to $62.9 million. Another film falling four places this weekend was the Lionsgate product Den of Thieves: Pantera which dropped from fifth to ninth place this weekend where it took in $3.0 million to bring its overall total to $31.9 million. Finally, A24 saw The Brutalist crack the top ten in its sixth week of release as it brought in $2.9 million to lift its total to $9.3 million.

This weekend saw three films forced from the top ten as last weekend’s seventh-, ninth-, and tenth-place titles all failed to make the cut this week. After five weeks in release, Nosferatu managed to pull in $93.2 million for Focus Features before taking a bow and departing the top ten. The Universal Pictures juggernaut, Wicked leaves the top ten once again (only to return soon perhaps?) with a ten-week tally of $468.8 million. Finally, after dropping to tenth place last weekend, A24’s Babygirl left the top ten completely, although it did leave with a five-week total of $27.2 million.
