Box-Office Weekend: Furiosa Narrowly Defeats Garfield
Yet again, a new film sits atop the box-office weekend top ten as Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to stave off fellow newcomer The Garfield Movie by a mere $0.7 million to take the top spot prior to the holiday.
In its first weekend of release, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga brought in $25.5 million for Warner Bros., allowing it to finish just ahead of Sony Pictures Releasing’s second-place claimant, The Garfield Movie, which brought in $24.8 million during its debut weekend. Meanwhile, this pushed last weekend’s top film IF to third place where it added $16.1 million for Paramount Pictures, bringing its two-week tally to $58.7 million. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes dropped two spots as well, landing in fourth place this weekend with $13.4 million. This gives the 20th Century Studios film a three-week total of $122.8 million. Universal Pictures’ The Fall Guy lost a spot as it fell from fourth to fifth this weekend where it took in $5.9 million. This gives the film a four-week total of $72.2 million.
Dropping three spots to land in sixth place this weekend was The Strangers: Chapter 1 with $5.6 million, giving the Lionsgate Films product a two-week tally of $21.3 million. Angel Studios enjoyed the debut of Sight in seventh place where it brought in $2.8 million for the studio. United Artists Releasing, however, had to watch Challengers drop three spots to claim eighth place this weekend with $1.4 million. Still, the film sports a somewhat respectable five-week total of $46.5 million. Meanwhile, Focus Features’ Back to Black fell three spots to finish in ninth place this weekend with $1.1 million brought in during its second weekend of release, raising its total to $5.0 million. Finally, Babes managed to climb into the ten ten and claim the final spot in its second week of release with $1.06 million as it enjoys a wider release (the film now sports an overall total of $1.3 million).
Last weekend’s bottom four films were thrust from this week’s top ten list as Tarot, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, The Blue Angels, and Unsung Hero all failed to make the cut this weekend. After four weeks, Screen Gems managed to get $17.0 million out of Tarot before seeing it fall from thew top ten. Warner Bros., however, enjoyed nine weeks of strong performing as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire made the studio $195.5 million. With only one week in release, The Blue Angels, did make $1.4 million for Amazon/MGM. Finally, after five weeks in release, Lionsgate Films is left $19.8 million richer by Unsung Hero.
