Box-Office Weekend: Ghostbusters Tops Eternals

The long-anticipated continuation of the “Ghostbusters” saga, Ghostbusters: Afterlife wrested the top of the box-office weekend from Marvel’s Eternals by a $33.2 million margin.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife posterThe latest addition to the “Ghostbusters” canon captured $44.0 million in its first weekend of release. With reviews mixed with regards to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, it remains to be seen whether or not the film will add to its strong opening. Hopefully it does as it has certainly reinvigorated the series. The strong opening for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, dropped Marvel’s Eternals to second place with $10.8 million. The film now claims a three-week total of $135.5 million. In its second week of release, the family-friendly Clifford the Big Red Dog dropped one spot to finish in third place with $8.1 million over the weekend. The film can now bark about a two-week tally of $33.5 million. The second debut of the weekend, King Richard, starring Will Smith as Richard Williams (father to Venus and Serena Williams), made $5.7 million in its first week of release. Falling two spots to fifth place was the science-fiction epic Dune: Part One, which added $3.1 million over the weekend to lift its five-week total to $98.2 million.

Meanwhile, the ever-present Venom: Let There Be Carnage dropped one spot to finish in sixth place with $2.8 million. The film claims the highest overall total of any film currently in the top ten with $206.5 million over eight weeks. Agent 007 finished in seventh place with No Time To Die, after dropping from fourth with $2.7 million over the weekend. This gives Daniel Craig’s final film in the series a total of $154.7 million. Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch pulled in $970,000 in its fifth week of release, which was good enough to land the film in the eighth spot and lift its overall total to $13.3 million. Also falling one spot was Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast, which finished in ninth place this weekend adding $940,000 to give it a two-week total of $3.4 million. Finally, the animated Ron’s Gone Wrong did enough right to bring in $888,000 over the weekend, allowing it to finish in the final spot of this weekend’s top ten. The film now boasts a five-week total of $22.1 million.

As happened last week, two films again departed the weekend box-office top ten. Spencer abdicates with a three-week total of $6.1 million while the horror film Antlers departs after amassing $10.3 million over its first four weeks in release.
