Box-Office Weekend: Jumanji Goes to the Next Level

Unlike last weekend, where only one new film managed to crack the weekend box-office top ten, three new films took spots amongst this weekend’s top films. Finishing in the top spot, by a very wide margin, was the sequel Jumanji: The Next Level, which enjoyed an opening box-office weekend that brought in $60.1 million.

Jumanji: The Next Level posterDespite being knocked to second place and making over $40 million less than Jumanji, Frozen II did add another $19.2 million this weekend and easily beat third-place finisher Knives Out, which brought in $9.3 million. The four-week total for the Disney behemoth stands at $366.5 million and this weekend’s impressive second-place finish portends a lengthy stay in the top ten. The aforementioned Knives Out now sports a three-week tally of $78.9 million.

The weekend’s second newcomer, Richard Jewell, took fourth place with a $5.0 million showing to narrowly beat the third debut of the weekend, the horror remake of Black Christmas, which made $4.4 million to finish in fifth place just behind Richard Jewell and just ahead of Ford v Ferrari which added $4.1 million over the weekend, to give the film a five-week haul of $98.2 million, despite falling from a third-place finish last weekend.

Seventh place belonged to last weekend’s fourth-place finisher, Queen & Slim. In its third week of release, the urban crime romance took in $3.6 million, lifting its overhaul numbers to $33.2 million. Similarly plummeting in the top ten, the Tom Hanks led A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood fell from fifth to eighth this weekend with $3.4 million, lifting its overall numbers to $49.3 million.

Last weekend’s new arrival, Dark Waters, managed $2.0 million this weekend to finish in the ninth spot. This gives the Mark Ruffalo vehicle a four-week total of $8.9 million. Finally, in its fourth-week of release, the action crime drama 21 Bridges, took in $1.2 million and finished in the tenth spot, giving the film a total of $26.4 million.

Taking their leave of the top ten were three films: the (ahem) comedy Playing with Fire, which made around $43.3 million during its six weeks in release; the war action film/drama Midway, which took in $55.2 million over its first six weeks of release; and, the Batman villain origin story, Joker, which has made $333 million during its eleven weeks in theaters.

Yet again, next weekend’s box-office will see a few new releases and should be dominated by the debut of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker from Disney. Also hitting screens next weekend will be the animated Spies in Disguise and the film adaptation of the musical Cats.
