Box-Office Weekend: Jumanji Maintains Hold on Box Office

Bringing in an estimated $35.4 million over the four-day holiday weekend allowed Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle to easily retain its perch atop the box office. In just four weeks, the film has grossed an impressive $291.6 million. Steven Spielberg’s new film The Post locked in at the second spot in its fourth week, and first week of wide release with a showing of $23.4 million.

Jumanji: Welcome to the JungleLiam Neeson’s newest action thriller, The Commuter, debuted with a tangible $16.4 million, which was good enough for third place in this week’s top ten. Meanwhile, the Hugh Jackman vehicle, The Greatest Showman held onto the fourth spot, bringing in $15.3 million to raise its four-week total to $98.4 million. Although Star Wars: Episode VIII—The Last Jedi fell to fifth place just behind The Greatest Showman with $15.3 million, the film’s five-week total of $595.6 million is probably leaving everyone involved with it smiling these days.

The family-oriented sequel Paddington 2 debuted in sixth place earning $15 million from families presumably not wanting to take in Jumanji or Star Wars again. Falling from second to seventh place this week was the horror film Insidious: The Last Key with $14.6 million, suggesting that it may be ready to exit the top ten relatively soon. Debuting in the eighth spot is the Taraji P. Henson vehicle Proud Mary with $12 million. The critically lambasted exploitation film will likely also exit the top ten soon.

Closing out the top ten this week are Pitch Perfect 2 in the ninth spot, which brought in another $7.3 million to raise its four-week total to $96.3 million. Finally, the Winston Churchill drama starring Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour maintained a spot in the top ten for a second week with $5.6 million, raising its eight-week accumulation to $36.8 million.
