Box-Office Weekend: Marvel Feels Fantastic

The Man of Steel could only stay atop the box-office weekend top ten for two weeks as Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps debuted over the weekend, bringing in $93.1 million than the last son of Krypton did.

“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” posterWalt Disney Studios Motion Pictures saw its latest offering from Marvel, The Fantastic Four: First Steps debut in first place with total of $118 million, which ended up being $93.1 million more than second-place finisher Superman which was knocked down to second place by Marvel’s first family. In its third week of release, Superman took in $24.9 million for Warner Bros., to bring its overall total to $289.5 million. Also falling a spot was Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World: Rebirth which ended up in third place with $13 million and a four-week total of $301.5 million. Climbing one spot to claim fourth place was F1: The Movie as it added $6.2 million over the weekend to bring its five-week total to $165.6 million for Warner Brothers. This pushed Smurfs from fourth to a fifth-place finish this weekend, where it made $5.4 million for Paramount Pictures International to give it a two-week total of $22.8 million.

Perhaps the furthest fall of the weekend was Sony Pictures Releasing’s I Know What You Did Last Summer which dropped from third all the way to sixth where it took in $5.1 million in its second weekend of release, giving the film an overall total of $23.6 million. Meanwhile, Universal Pictures International saw How to Train Your Dragon fall one spot from sixth to seventh place where it added $2.8 million to bring its seven-week total to $257 million for the studio. Similarly, A24’s Eddington fell from seventh to eighth as it brought in $1.7 million over the weekend to raise its two-week total to $8.1 million. Sony Pictures Classics saw its release Oh, Hi! debut in ninth place with $1.1 million over the weekend. Just behind that, with $1.0 million was Lionsgate’s The Home which took the final spot of the top ten.

For the second consecutive weekend, the eighth-, ninth-, and tenth-place films from the previous week were pushed out of the top ten by newcomers to the list. After six weeks in release, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures has to settle with a $71.5 million total for Elio as the film falls from the top ten. With a ten-week total of $420.2 million (and also a Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures product), Lilo & Stitch also failed to make this weekend’s top ten list. Finally, after six weeks in release, the Sony Pictures Releasing offering of 28 Years Later drops from the top ten with an overall total of $70 million.
