Box-Office Weekend: Maverick Is Top Gun
Top Gun: Maverick soared above the competition to assume the place atop the box-office weekend. The Tom Cruise-led film bested the second-place finisher by $107.6 million.
Cruise and Top Gun: Maverick debuted with an impressive $124 million over its three-day opening weekend (an amount that will undoubtedly rise over Memorial Day). This relegated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to second place with $16.4 million. This did allow the Marvel film to eclipse the $370 million mark in its fourth weekend of release. The second debut of the weekend, The Bob’s Burgers Movie brought in $12.6 million in its first weekend of release. Meanwhile, last weekend’s second-place film, Downton Abbey: A New Era was knocked down to fourth place with $5.9 million to show for its second weekend in release. The film now sports a total of $28.5 million. Similarly falling a few spots over the weekend was The Bad Guys, which dropped from third to fifth place with $4.6 million this weekend. The film now lays claim to a six-week tally of $81.4 million.
In sixth place, was last weekend’s fourth-place finisher, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 which added $2.5 million over the weekend to lift its eight-week total to $185.1 million. This pushed Everything Everywhere All at Once to seven place. With its $2.5 million over the weekend, the film lifted its ten-week tally to $56.8 million. Meanwhile, The Lost City climbed a spot to finish in eighth place over the weekend with $1.8 million. The Sandra Bullock film now sports a ten-week total of $101.7 million. All of this activity pushed last weekend’s fifth-place finisher, Men to ninth place this weekend with $1.2 million. This gives the film a two-week tally of $6 million. Finally, the third debut of the weekend, F3: Fun and Frustration took in $1 million over the last three days to land firmly in tenth place.
This weekend, three films were pushed out of the box-office weekend top ten. The seventh-place film last weekend, Fantastic Beats: The Secrets of Dumbledore leaves with a seven-week tally of $94.8 million. Meanwhile, after finishing in eighth-place last weekend, Firestarter departs the top ten with a three-week total of $8.1 million.
