Box-Office Weekend—Maze Runner: The Death Cure Debuts on Top
Bringing in an estimated $23.5 million, Maze Runner: The Death Cure took the top spot at the box office this weekend. While the film did well, it’s opening was still a bit disappointing given this installment’s budget. Finishing in second-place was last week’s top film, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle with $16.4 million. The film has made an astonishing $338.1 million in its first six weeks of release, passing last year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming ($334.2 million).
After expanding nationwide this weekend, Hostiles managed to land in third place with $10.2 million. Hugh Jackman and The Greatest Showman swapped spots with Steven Spielberg’s The Post to finish in fourth place with $9.5 million (and a six-week total of $126.5 million). The Post has brought in $58.5 million during its six-week run, including $8.9 million this weekend.
The Chris Hemsworth-led action film, 12 Strong fell from second to sixth, but still brought in $8.6 million, raising its two-week total to $29.8 million, but still perhaps signaling that a fall from the top ten might not be too far off. The action, crime drama Den of Thieves similarly fell from third place last week to seventh this week with $8.4 million (and a two-week total of $28.5 million).
Guillermo del Toro’s latest film, The Shape of Water was obviously helped by the slew of awards nominations heaped upon last week as it vaulted into the eighth spot with $5.7 million. Finishing just ahead of the slowly fading Paddington 2, which brought in $5.6 million as it fell from the sixth to the ninth spot. Closing out this week’s top ten, is the Bollywood offering Padmaavat, which brought in $4.3 million. Since next week boasts only one new release, the horror film Winchester, starring Helen Mirren, the top ten doesn’t look to fluctuate too much over Super Bowl weekend.
