Box Office Weekend: Mission: Impossible Keeps Steady; Fantastic Four Proves A Bit Rocky

The latest superheroes to get a reboot were ready to storm the box office, and failed to even break the second week returns of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, which had a less than stellar start to begin with. Still, the Tom Cruise action thriller, with an estimated $29.4 million, is remaining fairly strong here and overseas, while Fantastic Four opened with an estimated $26.2 million, low overseas returns, and a complete critical drubbing. However, both films remain unwilling to reveal their Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nationbudget costs. While neither of those films is likely to be cheap, things are already looking good for third-place finisher The Gift; even at an estimated $12 million opening, it has already well surpassed its $5 million costs and has all the critical acclaim that Fantastic Four wishes it had.

Vacation slides into fourth with an estimated $9.1 million, and earning a now respectable $37.3 million despite its reviews (though “respectable” could change if the film ends up costing way higher than might be expected). Ant-Man and its estimated $7.8 million have made it slightly underwhelming domestically, but counting worldwide total it is doing well enough. Though not as well as Minions, whose estimated $7.4 million is adding to a total well and above its $74 million costs, both domestic and abroad…at $912 million in total worldwide gross.

In terms of less traditional theatrical fare, it is hard to say if Meryl Streep has a winner in Ricki and the Flash. With Streep as the titular Ricki hoping to make right her family situation after years of touring with her rock band, the drama debut with an estimated $7 million and mixed critical review.

Meanwhile, Trainwreck continues to roll in the money with an estimated $6.3 million, and Pixels may become slightly profitable in worldwide gross, but at an estimated $5.4 million, it will fall well short of the mark in domestic totals. Finally, Southpaw stayed in the running with an estimated $4.8 million, though the “hard-luck boxer” story is not drawing the kind of money it needs, having totaled $40.7 million over a $30 million budget.
