Box-Office Weekend: Sinners Stunts Minecraft

A new film tops the box-office weekend as Sinners debuted in first place taking the top spot by the slim margin of $4.3 million from last weekend’s top film.

“Sinners” posterIn its first weekend of release, the Warner Bros. release of Sinners took in $45.6 million for the studio. This proved to be just enough to edge last weekend’s top film, A Minecraft Movie to second place where it brough in $41.3 million – also for Warner Bros. – in its third weekend of release, lifting its overall total to $344.6 million. Meanwhile, Angel Studios saw its offering of The King of Kings drop a spot to land in third place with $17.3 million in its second weekend of release, bringing its overall total to $45.3 million for the studio. In its second weekend of release, the 20th Century Studios product, The Amateur, fell from third to fourth place where it added $7.2 million, raising its overall total to $27.3 million for the studio. Similarly, A24 saw Warfare lose a spot and finish in fifth place where it made $4.9 million for the studio, bringing its two-week total to $17.1 million.

After debuting in fifth place last weekend, Drop fell to sixth this weekend where it took in $3.4 million for Universal Pictures International (UPI) to bring its two-week total to $13.5 million. In seventh place, GKIDS enjoyed the debut of Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing to the tune of $2.8 million. Meanwhile, eighth place went to the Focus Features re-release of the twentieth anniversary of Pride & Predjudice which brought in $2.7 million for the studio. Falling three spots to land in ninth place, The Chosen: Last Supper Part 3 took in $1.7 million to bring its two-week tally to $11.1 million. After landing in eight place last weekend, the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures product Snow White dropped two spots to claim tenth place this weekend in $1.2 million, giving the film a five-week total of $84.6 million.

Three films were forced from the top ten this weekend. After claiming seventh place last weekend, A Working Man couldn’t maintain a spot on this weekend’s list and departs with a four-week total of $35.9 million for Amazon MGM Studios. Universal Pictures saw The Woman in the Yard fall out of the top ten after a ninth-place finish last week, earning a four-week total of $21.9 million. Finally, last weekend’s tenth-place film, The Chosen: Last Supper Part 2 leaves the top ten with a three-week tally of $12.2 million.

He currently lives in the Detroit area with his wife and their dogs.
