Box-Office Weekend: Sonic 3 Takes Two

For a second consecutive weekend, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 held onto the top spot of the box-office weekend over Mufasa: The Lion King, though this weekend’s victory was by a mere $0.9 million and not the $27 million lead it enjoyed last week.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” posterDuring its second weekend in release, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 took in $38 million for Paramount Pictures, bringing the film’s two-week tally to $137.6 million and allowing it to retain the top spot of the box-office weekend top ten. Just behind it was Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures’ Mufasa: The Lion King with $37.1 million, which allowed it to hold onto second place for another weekend. Meanwhile, Focus Features enjoyed a third-place debut for Nosferatu as it took in $21.2 million for the studio over the weekend on its way to an overall opening week total of $40.3 million. This, of course, pushed Wicked down a spot to fourth place where it made $19.5 million, giving the Universal Pictures’ product a six-week total of $424.2 million. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures also saw Moana 2 fall a spot to land in fifth place this weekend with $18.2 million, giving the film a five-week total of $394.6 million.

Searchlight Pictures enjoyed a strong $11.6 million debut from A Complete Unknown which allowed it to claim sixth place. Likewise, A24’s Babygirl cracked the top ten in its second weekend of release by landing in seventh place with $4.4 million. The film now sports an overall total of $7.2 million. Falling two spots, Paramount Pictures’ Gladiator II took over eighth place with $4.2 million this weekend, giving it a six-week total of $163.1 million. Meanwhile, Angel Studios saw Homestead fall four spots to land in ninth place with $3.2 million taken in over the weekend, giving the film a two-week total of $12.9 million. Finally, The Fire Inside debuted in the tenth spot of this weekend’s top ten with $2.0 million over the last three days and an overall total of $4.3 million.

Again, four films were forced from the top ten as last weekend’s seventh- through tenth-place films all failed to make the cut again this weekend. After dropping to seventh place last weekend, Sony Pictures Releasing saw its Kraven the Hunter fall out of the top ten after three weeks and with only $21.4 million to show for the effort. Meanwhile, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim made only $8.6 million for Warner Bros. over the last three weeks before taking its bow from the top ten this weekend. After bring in $39.7 million for Lionsgate over the last eight weeks, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever dropped from the top ten following last weekend’s finish in ninth place. Finally, despite breaking into the top ten for the first time last weekend, Queer fell out of the top ten this weekend with a four-week total of $2.8 million.
