Box Office Weekend: Suicide Squad Takes Dive
Suicide Squad may not have had the momentum to carry over from its record breaking opening weekend (falling to a $43.8 million weekend estimate), but the movie has still managed to best its production costs as it crosses $465.4 million in worldwide gross. In the meantime, Sausage Party was not able to quite duplicate that feat with an estimated $33.6 million and the second-place spot, but at a mere $19 million to make, the well-received (and definitely not for kids) animated spectacle from Seth Rogen looks to become a hit on its own merits in the weeks ahead. Also critically acclaimed, time will tell if business will stay strong for Pete’s Dragon. The remake of the 1977 Disney film has proven a winner with critics and audiences, but its estimated $21.5 million debut weekend needs to pick up steam (here and overseas) if it hopes to make back its $65 million in costs.
Jason Bourne looks likely to break even on its costs as an estimated $13.6 million weekend placed it firmly as the third highest domestic earning entry in the franchise, while Bad Moms and its estimated $11.5 million weekend is cleaning up, having brought in $71.5 million on a $20 million budget. The Secret Life of Pets is not too shabby either; at $335.9 million in domestic gross and an estimated $8.8 million weekend, it remains far and away the highest earning film currently in the top ten.
In seventh, Star Trek Beyond continues its financial tumble; even with an estimated $6.8 million weekend and $139.7 million brought in so far domestically, the film is still very far from reaching bank on its $185 million budget, and appears likely to bomb before leaving the box office despite its positive reception. It came in just above Florence Foster Jenkins (estimated $6.6 million), the Meryl Streep-led historical dramedy about the (arguably) worst singer of the twentieth century. With no budget, it is hard to see how well it might be doing…but then, it does not take much to assume that Nine Lives (estimated $3.5 million) and its $13.6 million in total domestic gross is not doing as well as might be hoped, even as it, too, has no reported budget.
Finally, it may be last on the list, but not in terms of total earnings…the horror hit Lights Out brought in an estimated $3.2 million, adding to a whopping $61.1 million over its $4.9 million budget.
