Box Office Weekend: Sully Rides High for Second Week

Sully not only held up well in its second week with a small drop in revenue (an estimated $22 million), but held onto first place with ease…the second-place finisher, Blair Witch, did not even break $10 million, with an estimated $9.7 million. Still, the latest horror entry in the long dormant franchise managed to nearly double its $5 million costs in a single weekend, even if it’s critical reviews are less than spectacular. Praise was much better Sully Posterfor Bridget Jones’s Baby, another entry for a dormant franchise, though the wait may have been a little too long as its estimated $8.2 million is on par with the previous films domestically, but at a $35 million cost, it will most likely have to rely on overseas dollars to keep it in good standing.

In fourth, the thriller Snowden, based on the real-life CIA intelligence leaker, delivered only lukewarm critical reception and mild box office to match, opening with an estimated $8 million against a $40 million budget. Don’t Breathe, in the meantime, storms up the box office with an estimated $5.6 million in its fourth week, and a hefty $75.3 million gross on a $9.9 million budget. Despite a massive drop in revenue, When the Bough Breaks is also a financial success, an estimated $5.5 million bringing it to $22.7 million so far on a $10 million projected budget.

Suicide Squad remains the highest earning film of the current top ten, an estimated $4.7 million bringing it to $313.8 million in domestic gross over seven weeks. Belgian animated critical reject The Wild Life, in the meantime, did not lose much audience, but with a slow start to begin with, it only added an additional $2.7 million to its paltry $6.7 million earned so far. So far, though, financial disappointment looms large for both Kubo and the Two Strings (estimated $2.5 million) and Pete’s Dragon (estimated $2 million); while both films have garnered decent to high critical and audience praise, both appear unlikely to break even on their production costs, even with the addition of overseas ticket sales.
