Box-Office Weekend: Superman Destroys Dinos

As occurred seven days ago, the top film of the previous box-office weekend top ten was pushed out of first place by a new blockbuster release. This weekend, Superman assumed control of the top ten by a margin of $82 million over last weekend’s number one film.

“Superman” posterThe latest cinematic incarnation of the Man of Steel, simply titled Superman, debuted at the top of the box-office weekend bringing in $122 million for Warner Brothers. This was more than enough to dislodge last weekend’s top film, Jurassic World: Rebirth and relegate it to second place where it made $40 million, giving the Universal Pictures product a two-week total of $232.1 million. The second Warner Bros. picture in this week’s top ten, F1: The Movie, fell from second to third place this weekend, adding $13 million to lift its three-week total to $136.2 million for the studio. In its fifth week in release, How to Train Your Dragon brought in $7.8 million, allowing it to claim fourth place after a third-place finish last weekend. The film now boasts a five-week total of $239.8 million. Also dropping a spot this weekend was the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures release Elio, which finished in fifth place with $3.9 million; this brings the film’s four-week total to $63.7 million.

After landing in fifth place last weekend, 28 Years Later dropped to sixth place this weekend where it brought in $2.73 million for Sony Pictures Releasing, raising the film’s four-week total to $65.7 million. Just behind that, with $2.7 million was the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures product Lilo & Stitch, which claimed seventh place with $2.7 million. This brings the film’s seven-week total to $414.6 million. Also in its eighth week of release, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, held steady in eighth place with $1.4 million, raising the film’s overall total to $194 million. Falling three spots to land in ninth place, M3GAN 2.0 brought in $1.3 million for Universal Pictures, raising its three-week total to $22.4 million. Finally, after a ninth-place finish last weekend, the A24 release Materialists landed in tenth place this weekend with $720,498. This gives the film a five-week total of $35.2 million.

Again, just one film was pushed out of the top ten this weekend as last week’s tenth-place finisher, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina failed to crack this weekend’s list. Instead, the release from Lionsgate settled for a six-week total of $57.9 million.
