Box-Office Weekend: Thieves Dethrones the King

After climbing to the top spot of the box-office weekend last week, Mufasa: The Lion King succumbed to newcomer Den of Thieves: Pantera this weekend and relinquished the number one spot by a margin of $2.3 million.

In its first weekend of release, Lionsgate’s Den of Thieves: Pantera claimed the top spot of the box-office weekend after bringing in $15.5 million. This was enough to push last week’s top film, Mufasa: The Lion King to second place where it took in $13.2 million, raising the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures film’s four-week total to $188.8 million. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also dropped a spot, to finish in third with $11 million in its fourth weekend of release, bringing the Paramount Pictures’ product’s four-week total to $204.5 million. Focus Features similarly saw Nosferatu drop from third to fourth where it added $6.8 million over the weekend, bringing its three-week total to $81.8 million. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures also saw Moana 2 drop a place to land in fifth, where it added $6.5 million to raise its seven-week total to $434.9 million.

In its eighth weekend in release, Universal Pictures’ Wicked dropped a spot to take over sixth place with $5.0 million, while raising its overall total to $458.9 million for the studio. Meanwhile, A Complete Unknown lost ground and fell to seventh place where it took in $5.0 million to finish just south of Wicked in placement on the top ten. The Searchlight Pictures product now sports a three-week total of $50.8 million. After holding its ground in seventh place last weekend, A24’s Babygirl added another $3.1 million this weekend, but couldn’t hold onto seventh place and instead fell to eighth. Still, the film boasts a three-week total of $21.7 million for the studio. In its first week of release, Game Changer debuted in ninth place with $2.1 million over the weekend. Lastly, Roadside Attractions enjoyed The Last Showgirl cracking the top ten in its fifth week of release with $1.4 million earned over the last three days. This raises the film’s overall total to $1.5 million.

Three films were bounced out of the top ten this weekend as last week’s eighth-, ninth-, and tenth-place films all failed to crack this week’s list. After eight weeks in release, Paramount Pictures saw Gladiator II bring in a total of $171 million. Meanwhile, after four weeks in release, Angel Studios’ Homestead departs with $19.3 million in the bank. Finally, after three weeks in release, The Fire Inside brought in a total of $7.9 million for Amazon MGM Studios before taking a bow and leaving the top ten behind.
