Box Office Weekend: Wonder Woman Still Box Office Queen

In only its second week of release, the super heroine film Wonder Woman has crossed the $200 million mark earning $57.2 million over the weekend, easily besting the Tom Cruise-led monster-film The Mummy, which brought in a not-too-shabby $32.2 million. While positions may be switched worldwide, Wonder Woman is still the crème de la crème of the box office for a second week in a row stateside.

Wonder Woman PosterThe Mummy did push last week’s second-place film, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, down to the third spot where it boasted $12.3 million, giving it a two-week total of $44.6 million. Sticking in the fourth-spot is box-office stalwart Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales with $10.7 million. The other super hero film in the top ten (sorry Captain Underpants), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 finished in fifth place with $6.2 million, bringing its six-week total to $366.4 million.

The low-budget horror film It Comes at Night finished in sixth-place bringing in $6 million which, while still a profit above the film’s less-than $5 million production budget was still shy of the expected $10 million opening. Baywatch saved another $4.6 million to bring its three-week total up to a rather disappointing $51.1 million. Meanwhile, the Kate Mara vehicle Megan Leavey managed to earn $3.8 million on just under 2,000 screens, which was good enough for eighth place.

The final two films in this week’s top ten include the latest entry to the Alien saga, Alien: Covenant with $1.8 million (bring its four-week total to an underwhelming $71.2 million) and Everything, Everything which brought in an additional $1.6 million to boost its four-week total to $31.7 million.

Next week brings the release of the latest from Disney/Pixar, Cars 3 as well as the horror release 47 Meters Down. Both of which should be able to take a place in some way in next week’s Top Ten.
