Box Office Weekend: It’s Civil War as Captain America Ends Jungle Book’s Reign

Disney is having a wonderful weekend at the box office; not only are three movies owned by the Mouse in the top ten, and not only are all smash successes in worldwide gross, but its latest offering debuted in first, toppling its previous outing. Captain America: Civil War made a grand debut and continues the streak of chart-topping Marvel successes, opening at a whopping estimated $181.8 million. It sent The Jungle Book back to a distant second with an Captain America: Civil War Posterestimated $21.9 million, but The Jungle Book has had a fantastic run with three weeks in the first-place spot (their third film, Zootopia, remains in the top ten, in seventh, with an estimated $2.7 million and going strong even at ten weeks of release). Mother’s Day, in the meantime, while not winning much support overall, did receive a boost in performance thanks to its title, as the film rose to third and nabbed an estimated $9 million over the holiday weekend. Considering the roughly $50 million price tag of the previous holiday-themed romances from director Garry Marshall, this one does not appear likely to do well before leaving theaters, with only $20.7 million in gross so far.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War continues to decline rapidly, an estimated $3.6 million not adding up to much as it enters its third week (and only a mild performance in worldwide gross). Keanu, despite critical praise, does not appear to be on the way to high earnings, as an estimated $3.1 million brings it to $15.1 million domestically, with a ways to go to break even on its costs. Barbershop: The Next Cut, with an estimated $2.7 million, is in far better shape than Keanu with its $48.8 million domestic gross, but if it cost closer to the second Barbershop film than the original, it may be hurting more than it appears.

In eighth, The Boss has broken even on its budget with an estimated $1.8 million weekend, but ninth-place finisher Ratchet & Clank appears to be a financial dud; at an estimated $1.5 million for the weekend, it has made $7.1 million in total gross…bad news for any animated film. But finally, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has likely seen an end to its place on the top ten, an estimated $1 million bring it likely to profitability (counting overseas dollars), but not anywhere near the success that Captain America: Civil War is likely to see.
