The story takes place on the streets of New York with the introduction of each of the four main illusionists doing their acts. You will experience each of them performing their sleight of hand on the everyday person. J. Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) is a master with a deck of cards; you can’t help but play along and pick a card yourself. This scene is not to be missed as I am still wondering, “how did he do that?” He is his usual quick-witted, sarcastic persona that we came to appreciate in The Social Network. Next we have Woody Harrelson as the older illusionist of the group, Merritt Mckinney, his talent lies in the art of mind control or hypnotism. His opening act is next to side splitting. The third male of the group would be the boyish, pick pocket, street scammer Jack Wilder played by the heart throb Dave Franco. Lastly, we have Heneley Reeves played by Isla Fisher. She is the beautiful and sassy escape artist.
The four are summoned together by an unknown someone to form the incredible illusionist team aptly called, The Four Horsemen. A year later they are performing their first show in Las Vegas with insurance mogul Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine) as their sponsor. The finale is incredible with what appears to be an international bank heist using someone randomly picked from the audience. Before you know it money is flying in from the ceiling, and millions of dollars have been stolen from a bank in France. This is where the police and Interpol get involved. FBI agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) and French investigator Alma Dray (Melanie Laurent) begin questioning the very cocky and extremely confident Four Horsemen. Since they have absolutely nothing to hold them on, they are let go.
Agent Rhodes then starts questioning Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman) a professional debunker of Illusionists/magicians. It is no surprise that Bradley was in the audience and was secretly videotaping the entire performance. Bradley is famous for having uncovered the secrets to many things thought to be unexplainable, but ultimately have turned out to be very much so. Rhodes is starting to get the inclination that Thaddeus may just very well be the Fifth Horseman, the mastermind of the entire caper.
Now You See Me has a lot of action and I certainly don’t want to give too much away. But there is an incredible ending that will blow you away. I can’t speak highly enough about just how entertaining this film is; it’s quirky, quick witted, and extremely well done. Bravo to writers Ed Solomon, Boaz Yakin, and Edward Ricourt; and I cannot go without mentioning, outstanding direction by Louis Leterrier. Go see Now You See Me today!
