Weekend Box-Office: Thor Holds Off the Bridesmaids With His Mighty Hammer!

It may not have opened as big as Fast Five, but Thor is still proving a draw at the box office; the mighty Marvel character kept the top spot for a second week in a row with a nice, healthy $34.5 million, more than enough to boost it past the $100 million barrier. Second place went to newcomer Bridesmaids, the romantic raunch comedy written by and starring Saturday Night Live star Kristen Wiig, which is earning more than its fair share of fine reviews (and $24.4 million in its opening weekend). Fast Five is still showing strong, with $19.5 million this weekend and nearly $169 million overall.

Debuting in fourth place, the action horror thriller Priest garnered $14.5 million and poor reviews overall, while Rio faired about the same as last week, staying in place with only a slight drop to $8 million (and showing an overall good performance in five weeks). Jumping the Broom had the biggest drop from last week, losing over 50% of revenue and falling three places, making $7.3 million. It hasn’t been quite the blockbuster of those above (save for Priest), but has still made out well for itself, having made more this weekend alone than it cost to make. This puts it in a much better position than Something Borrowed, the third wedding related film on the Top 10, which made $7 million. Borrowed is almost on par with Broom in terms of revenue, but cost nearly five times more to make.

The slide down the list for Water for Elephants has been slow, but not painful; it made $4.1 million in the weekend for $48 million in total. However, even though it performed better than Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family, overall it lags behind, as the $2.2 million this weekend for Madea puts it in the realm of Tyler Perry’s other Madea films of $50 million or better (Madea Goes to Jail a stunning success at $90+ million). If those films (and those who have released their budgets) are any indication, Perry isn’t done making movies anytime soon. Finally, at the bottom, Soul Surfer manages to stay on the list for at least one more week; at $1.8 million this weekend, it caps off a relatively successful turnout of $39.2 million, proving itself for six weeks against admittedly very stiff competition.
