Box-Office Weekend: Dumbo Soars at Box Office

The latest beloved animated film turned live-action spectacle, Dumbo, debuted at the of the box-office weekend countdown with an impressive $46 million opening. Despite the solid opening, the film still came up short of many industry expectations. But, perhaps, like those that didn’t believe in the adorable pachyderm’s ability to fly, the industry will be surprised by the little guy’s staying power in the top ten over the next few weeks.

Dumbo posterThe horror film Us added $33.2 million to its coffers over the weekend to give Jordan Peele’s film an eye-popping two-week total of $127.8 million. Third place over the past weekend belonged definitively to Brie Larson and Captain Marvel which took in $20.7 million to give the latest film from Marvel a four-week tally of $354 million, making it the eighth largest domestic release within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The anti-abortion drama Unplanned made just enough, $6.4 million, during its opening weekend, to pass three-week veteran and fifth-place finisher Five Feet Apart, which took in $6.2 million (giving it a current total of $35.8 million). The animated Wonder Park added an another $5 million to lift it’s receipts to $38 million throughout its first three weeks of release, which was good enough for the sixth spot over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Universal and DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World brought in another $4.4 million to give the film a six-week total of $153.1 million. In stark contrast to that crowd favorite’s subject matter is eight-place finisher Hotel Mumbai, which made $3.2 million over the weekend, giving it a two-week total of $3.3 million as it enjoyed the benefits of a wider release over the weekend.

Closing out this week’s top ten is Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral in ninth place with $2.7 million. This gives the latest Madea film a five-week total of $70 million. Finally, the stoner comedy, The Beach Bum starring Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dogg, and Isla Fisher debuted this weekend in the tenth spot earning just $1.8 million despite a decent wide-release.
