Box Office Weekend: Lego Movie Builds Up to Retain Top Spot

Once again, The Lego Movie (of which a sequel was recently announced) managed to impress, grossing $275.7 million worldwide box office (in no little part to its continued success, with an estimated $31.5 million this weekend). It handily beat out the two big new releases, the Kevin Costner action thriller 3 Days to Kill (estimated $12.3 million) and the latest from Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson, Pompeii (estimated $10 million). Neither film is critically on par with The Lego Movie, either, but 3 Days to Kill has a much smaller $28 million budget to make up compared to Pompeii’s $100 million, making the latter less likely to earn back its keep.

RoboCop, meanwhile, has to rely on foreign dollars to make back most of its money, its estimated $9.4 million making it not much to talk about in the United States (though it has done well enough worldwide to make up its shortcomings). The Monuments Men (estimated $8.1 million) is in a similar but opposite boat, making most of its money here, but needing that little extra overseas push to make it profitable. About Last Night needs no help, however, its estimated $7.4 million making the romantic comedy more than successful over its costs ($38.2 million over a $12.5 million budget).

In “The Best of the Rest,” Ride Along cruises into its sixth week with an estimated $4.7 million and $123.2 million in domestic gross, but even this box office smash is dominated by Frozen, which left its fourteenth week with an estimated weekend gross of $4.4 million and $384.1 million in domestic totals, making it the third most successful film of 2013 (behind The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Iron Man 3). Both stand tall over a minor success and a flop: Endless Love managed to limp into domestic profit with an estimated $4.3 million, but Winter’s Tale (estimated $2.1 million) is less impressive, with only $11.2 million made in total against a $60 million budget.
