Box Office Weekend: Revenant Comes Back to Take the Top Spot

Fortunes are reviving for The Revenant. After a stint in second, it bypassed the competition to hold the top spot of the weekend with an estimated $16 million. While it is a rough victory (this weekend is the slowest weekend of 2016 so far), Oscar buzz and word of mouth are giving the film some much-needed revenue here and abroad. In second this week, Star Wars: The Force Awakens needs no help as it continues to slaughter box office records; with an estimated $14.3 million, it still has a chance, though slimming, of pushing Titanic out of the highest grossing film worldwide, though Avatar still appears out of reach (yet it has handily defeated both films in domestic earnings). Meanwhile, in third place, Ride The Revenant PosterAlong 2 took in an estimated $13 million, and looks on track to at least break even on its $40 million costs, though it took a massive hit in revenue since its first week.

Dirty Grandpa opened to little praise or revenue, earning an estimated $11.5 million on an unreported budget. The Robert De Niro comedy did slightly better than the doll-themed horror The Boy, whose estimated $11.3 million is a tolerable opening for its $10 million budget. The 5th Wave, however, had a tepid reception, especially for a YA-dystopian film, as well and opened to an estimated $10.7 million, well below what it needs to make back its $38 million.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi continues to struggle onwards with an estimated $9.8 million, bringing in $33.5 million so far against a $50 million budget (his worst earning film since Pain and Gain from 2013) but it is still odd as to why Daddy’s Home has refused to release a budget at this point…with an estimated weekend take of $5.3 million and $138.8 million taken in domestically, the comedy is likely a solid financial success.

In the final spots, we have one likely flop and one modest success. Norm of the North earned an estimated $4.1 million and $14.3 million total in domestic earnings, a weak showing for any animated film, while The Big Short brought in an estimated $3.5 million, breaking even on its seventh week at the box office.
