Box Office Weekend: Screens are Furious Once Again

While it probably comes as no surprise to anyone that The Fate of the Furious was atop the domestic box office for the third week in a row, what might shock some are the films that came in second (How to be a Latin Lover) and third place (Baahuball 2: The Conclusion).

The Fate of the Furious PosterThe latest film in the Furious saga brought in just over $19 million to bring the title’s domestic gross to an impressive $192.7 million. More surprising was the $12 million haul for the aforementioned How to be a Latin Lover, accomplished on just over 1,000 screens and a similar, yet singular, showing for the Tollywood film Baahuball 2: The Conclusion which brought in $10.1 million while playing in only 425 theaters.

Not-too-flattering reviews didn’t seem to do much for fourth-place finisher The Circle which pulled in a paltry $9.3 million despite playing in over 3,000 theaters. The steadily performing animated film The Boss Baby rounds out the top five by bringing in just over $9 million giving it an overall total of around $150 million.

Beauty and the Beast continues to perform well as it added another $6.4 million to its current estimated total of $480 million (although it did finish a bit short of the forty-five-day total of $502 million that belongs to The Dark Knight).

The rest of the top ten includes films that are more than likely on their way out of the top ten in the near future: Going in Style with $3.6 million, Smurfs: The Lost Village and Gifted both with an identical $3.3 million, and Unforgettable with a mere $2.3. But this is all academic given that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 arrives next week to surely take the domestic mantel (as it has already brought in over $100 million via the international market).
