Box Office Weekend: Turtles Win Box Office, But Not Critics

Though he’s not the director of the film, the Michael Bay touch is still present in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the film earning the wrath of critics but still proving a strong draw at the box office with an estimated $65 million, making over half of its $120 million costs. Guardians of the Galaxy could not compete against those numbers in week two, with only an estimated $41.5 million, though it was enough to give it a domestic profit in only its second week of release, as well as stand tall over everything else that came out this weekend.

Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesInto the Storm, about a Midwestern town besieged by numerous killer tornadoes, made an estimated $18 million, while The Hundred-Foot Journey, about the dramatic tension between French and Indian restaurants competing in the south of France, made an estimated $11.1 million. Neither film has been a success so far, but The Hundred-Foot Journey has the strongest chance of success thanks to a $22 million budget.

Lucy has proven itself a monetary success, an estimated $9.3 million bringing it close to $100 million in revenue, and it is doing far better than Step Up All In. The latest in the dance-off franchise falls well short with an estimated $6.6 million opening, the lowest of all the Step Up films. Hercules, too, continues to fall short with an estimated $5.7 million, though worldwide gross has provided some mild relief to its domestic woes.

Get on Up brought in an estimated $5 million, but whether the James Brown biopic has succeeded or not remains as mysterious as its unreported budget. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, on the other hand, has been a success, with an estimated $4.4 million placing it just shy of $200 million in revenue. And though it was not a critical success, Planes: Fire & Rescue pulled off some mild financial success with the help of an estimated $2.4 million.
