Box Office Weekend: Zootopia Big Three Weeks Running

Zootopia proved itself a box office champ as it entered its third week at the top with an estimated $38 million (and over $201.8 million in domestic gross). Its only real competition came from the third installment of The Divergent Series: Allegiant, which came in second place with an estimated $29.1 million. Excoriated by critics, it managed to top the mixed reviewed faith-based Miracles from Heaven, which opened with an estimated $15 million. As the only film in the top three to release its Zootopia Posterbudget numbers officially ($13 million), Miracles from Heaven is likely to break even before too long, while Allegiant, if it cost anywhere near the $100+ million of the previous films, is going to have to rely heavily on foreign box office (which is nearly twice as high as the domestic totals).

The horror sci-fi thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane picked up an estimated $12.5 million and $45.2 million so far…and while it is unsure if this is another success for J.J. Abrams, Deadpool and its estimated $8 million is a bonafide box office success, earning $340.9 million over a $58 million budget…and with a few more strong weekends, could be a strong contender to be the highest domestic-earning R-rated movie of all-time. London Has Fallen, in the meantime, is struggling at the box office, an estimated $6.9 million adding to a $50.1 million domestic total…not enough to make a dent in its $60 million costs.

The final few slots, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot leads a trifecta of poor performers. With an estimated $2.8 million bringing in $19.3 million so far on a $35 million budget. And while The Perfect Match (estimated $1.9 million) and The Brothers Grimsby (estimated $1.4 million) have not released any numbers, neither film has cracked $10 million in revenue, which is not a good sign for any film. In the meantime, down revenue actually spelled good news for The Revenant, which popped back into the top ten with an estimated $1.2 million.
