Box Office Weekend: Place…First Place Again for Spectre

At $245 million in costs, it had quite the hurdle to overcome. But thanks to the worldwide popularity of James Bond, Spectre has become a box office success. With an estimated $35.4 million in domestic weekend gross, it has brought in $543.8 million worldwide with many more weeks left to go. In the meantime, while The Peanuts Movie is staying in a strong second place with an estimated $24.2 million, it has a long way to go to be profitable on its whopping $99 million budget, with a worldwide total of $90.6 million.

Spectre PosterWith those two top spots, the rest of the box office for the weekend dropped off by wide margins. The Christmas-themed Love the Coopers did not win the hearts of moviegoers or critics and only picked up an estimated $8.4 million in its debut. The Martian, meanwhile, with an estimated $6.7 million, remained the highest-earning domestic film of the list, with $207.4 million earned in the U.S. alone. Things also did not go well for the opening of The 33, the drama of the true story of the Chilean mine collapse, which opened to mixed acclaim and an estimated $5.8 million. Goosebumps, in the meantime, may limp over the finish line when counting worldwide take, as an estimated $4.7 million adds to a $103.2 million worldwide gross on its $58 million budget. Bridge of Spies, too, is in the same spot, an estimated $4.3 million allowing it to break even in worldwide gross on its $40 million costs.

More Bollywood came to the list as Prem Ratan Dhan Payo landed in eighth with an estimated $2.4 million, having earned $31.1 million in foreign box office prior to its Thursday release here. While things are looking good for Hotel Transylvania 2, whose estimated $2.4 million helped it break even here while its worldwide take has made it a fine success, The Last Witch Hunter is not looking quite so well off…an estimated $1.5 million adds up to a worldwide gross less than its $90 million production costs.
